Nupur, a competitve dance programme is telecasted on NTV Bangla every Tuesday. The team behind the concept of Nupur, an innovative dance programme, featuring the talented child performers, are Shibly and Nipa, the dancing duo.

In the year 2002, Nupur started under the banner of the dance organisation Nrittyanchal, headed by Md Jahangir and sponsored by Standard Chartered Bank, with the aim of spotting talented dancers. The competition started wih the first phase of filtering some 400 upcoming artistes of the country. From each region, a committee comprising veteran dancers and other noted cultural personalities select the talented performers.

To generate interest among the viewers and to share the positive aspects of the art form amongst the young generation, proficient dancers, directors, choreographers and even musicians, are often invited who talk about their association with dance. Among them were Zeenat Barkatullah, Aupee Karim, Ishita, Anjana, Bijori Barkatullah and others who have moved to modeling, fashion, films and drama and continue to enthrall the audience. Plans are also afoot to present the colourful traditional dances of the indigenous people: the Rakhaines, Santals and the Chakmas, among others.

The serial, based on Suchitra Bhattacharjee’s novel Kachher Manush, is directed by Afsana Mimi.

"The novel Kachher Manush was published in the Indian magazine Desh Patrika during 1995-97. Kachher Manush was focused on women's issues in the middle class social structure.

Premanjita Chowdhury: The talk show host with panache

Unlike many talk show hosts, Premanjita has a direct, non-confrontational approach. Her style is characteristically frankand encouraging.

Premanjita started her career in 2004, when she hosted a Valentine's Day special entertainment programme on NTV Bangla as a guest anchor and earned appreciation in the bargain.

She hosted a popular evening talk show titled Shubho Shandha, one of the longest running shows on NTV Bangla. Throughout her career she has interviewed many of the leading personalities. Among her most famous interviewees were Shamim Azad, Tarik Anam Khan, Lucky Enam, Dr Enamul Huque, Khaled Khan, Dr Muhammed Zafar Iqbal, Sadya Afreen Mallick and many others. In all, she claims that she conducted over 20 interviews over the course of her career. Premanjita has eventually arrived at her current position as a news anchor and caster.

Premanjita grew up in Chittagong. After completing her HSC, she came to Dhaka. Currently, she is studying at the Department of Public Administration, Dhaka University. Although Chittagong is her hometown, the most formative years of her life have been spent in Dhaka.

Talking about her source of inspiration, she says, "I have always been inspired by my family and have received a lot of encouragement from them. My father, in particular, has been a source of strength for me. His opinions are important to me and he is a huge influence in my life."

To Priyota's surprise, one day he sends his mother with a marriage proposal. Priyota makes it clear that she has no feelings for Atonu. Atonu's mother realises all is not well with him and decides to take him to London for treatment. Atonu requests Priyota to bid him farewell. The play ends on a note of suspense.

Apurbo, Tinni and Hillol are the main characters of the play. The play is scripted by Iffat Arefin Tonni and directed by Chayanika Chowdhury.

Alfred Khokon the producer of NTV Bangla is also a poet. Alfred Khokon is a director working with offbeat programmes on TV. He caught public attention after making Mukto Khobor, a news-based programme on children. Ke Taharey Chintey Parey, a documentary of Fakir Lalon Shah, Rabindranath Er Moner Manushand several other programmes directed by Khokon have also won plaudits. Our cultural heritage and children's issues are his favourite themes.

In Shishuder Shomoy, which NTV Bangla telecasted to observe the World Child Rights Week, Khokon focuses on several issues such as child labour and child abuse. To quote Khokon, "We are going through a transition; the younger generation is growing up in a mixed cultural environment. Through the medium of TV, I intend to give them a sense of our rich cultural heritage."

As a matter of fact over the last few years Alfred has made programmes on our traditional music. Alfred has made two documentaries - Shurer Parampara and Bhab-baithaki, which was telecasted during Eid on NTV Bangla.

Shurer Parampara highlighted the legacy of the Khan family of Brahmanbaria. The programme covers Safdar Ali Khan and his two sons -- Ustad Alauddin Khan, Ustad Ayat Ali Khan -- and the next generation who dedicated themselves to classical music and instruments. According to Khokon, "I've tried to feature some historic moments as well as the unfamiliar facts in the programme".

In Bhab-baithaki two singers presented issues related to men and women. Khokon says, "It's neither a pala nor a kabir larai, as the singers will not improvise anything in the show. They will perform some songs of Lalon, Hason Raja and other traditional songs, dealing with relationships."

One of his documentary films is Aakashbari, based on urban children who miss the openness of nature. Khokon said, "It's a satire on the urban life where the children don't get to see the wide open spaces or come in contact with dirt and sand."

Why documentary films? Khokon's response: "My aim is to make feature films. And making documentaries help gain expertise in filmmaking, which I'll need when making feature films."

Last year, Unilever Bangladesh Limited launched a remarkable event, titled Shada Moner Manush to home in on individuals who are socially committed and do not hanker after fame, money and popularity.

The primary screening was undertaken by the journalists' panel of Prothom Alo. Eighty entries were selected out of 2,933 from all over the country. Finally the top 10 dedicated people were selected for the prestigious award. A television programme based on the life and times of the 10 finalists, Shada Moner Manush has been telecast on NTV Bangla recently.

The programme had an expert panel of judges, consisting of civil society members from our country such as Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya, executive director of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD); Rokia Afzal Rahman, former advisor to the caretaker government and Motiur Rahman, editor of the Prothom Alo.

The 10 recipients of the honour are Hanufa Begum known as the 'Mother Teresa of Bagachra' (Jessore); Binapani Sarkar for her initiatives to educate the underprivileged indigenous children of Joypurhaat; Abdul Majid of Puthiya, Rajshahi for setting an establishment for differently-abled children; Abdul Malek Howlader from Madaripur for tirelessly working with the local children at his pathshala despite his financial constraints; Shamsuddin for setting up an orphanage in Shorer Haat village in Rajshahi; Sufia Ahmed for running the Rajshahi Cancer and Children's Centre on her own expense; Sri Kanu Dutta from Feni for performing last rites of 1589 unclaimed corpses; Mokhlesur Rahman in Comilla for dedicating his life to the local Nazrul Academy High School; Ziaul Haq, a yoghurt vendor from Mushribhuja village in Chapai Nawabganj, for setting up a library with 8,000 books for disadvantaged students and Harun-ur-Rashid from East Jagannathpur village in Dinajpur for giving the local children the gift of music, training artistes who have received national and international acclaim.

These Shada Moner Manush were introduced to the media as they received their awards on February 2.

A new 26-episode TV serial Mon-e Mon-e will begin from January 29 on NTV Bangla.

The story of the serial revolves around Diba and her husband Dipon. The couple gets married on the day of a solar eclipse, without notifying Dipon's family. Diba decides to tackle the challenges ahead and so she goes to Dipon's house. From here the story of the TV serial unravels. To her great surprise, Diba soon discovers that she has a very unusual and quite extraordinary ability: she can read people's minds. At first she becomes confused and frightened -- to an extent that she doubts her sanity.

Soon she realises that she is not hearing things at all, these are thoughts of the people around her so she really can read minds. Everything goes fine until she discovers that her father-in-law had an affair in his younger days. From this point there are many ups and downs in the lives of Dipon and Diva.

Casting: Sara Zaker, Joya Ahsan, Shohana Saba, Tony Dayes, Masud Ali Khan, Chanchal Chowdhury and Farhana Mithu.

The play is written by Matia Banu Shuku and directed by Nurul Alam Atik.

RMMRU has produced the drama under the Awareness Campaign against Irregular Migration project that is supported by the British High Commission, Dhaka. Hishamuddin's only daughter Chitralekha finds Hasan interesting as well. As the story unfolds Hasan is diagnosed with brain tumour and is hospitalised.The play will be aired every Thursday and Friday at 8:25 pm.

Directed by Taher Shipon, the play features Aly Zaker, Amirul Haque Chowdhury, Jayanto Chatyopadhyay, Dolly Zahur, Shahiduzzaman Selim, Wahida Mallick Jolly, Sharmin Shila, Sanjida Preeti, Intekhab Dinar and others in major roles. Assaduzza-man Noor is the advisory director of the play.

Occasionally Quader takes the show outside Bangladesh to get a feedback from people in other countries. Quader, who is the correspondent for Press Trust of India (PTI) and Research Associate of Reader's Digest, plans to travel to the SAARC countries for the upcoming Summit. The programme is produced by Monowar Shahadat.
